Tool Design Engineer

About the role

Joby is seeking a Tool Design Engineer to create and improve tooling for large carbon‑fiber aircraft components. The role covers the full lifecycle from concept sketches to on‑floor implementation, supporting the launch of our vertical‑takeoff air‑taxi fleet.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and refine manufacturing aids such as jigs, fixtures, and molds for aircraft production.
• Apply GD&T principles to produce high‑precision layouts and eliminate fabrication ambiguity.
• Coordinate tooling activities with airframe design, structural analysis, planning, vendors, manufacturing, quality assurance, testing, and tool fabrication teams.
• Manage projects using established project‑management methodologies.

Required profile

• 5+ years of experience as a tool design or mechanical design engineer in aerospace or a highly regulated industry.
• Proficiency with 3D CAD software (CATIA, NX, SolidWorks or similar).
• Strong knowledge of GD&T and ASME Y14.5/Y14.100 standards.
• Experience with FEA, inspection fixture design, and prototype manufacturing.
• Project‑management experience and ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
• Fluent English (C1/C2 level).
