Senior Software Engineer - Java, Spring Boot, AWS

About the role

A leading plasma collection organization is looking for a Senior Software Engineer in San Jose, Costa Rica to lead the evolution of its donor management and digital health systems. The role goes beyond application support: it designs, builds and modernizes scalable, cloud-native platforms that affect donor experience, operational efficiency and data-driven decisions, partnering with quality, operations and regulatory stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

• Design and develop cloud-native, distributed systems for employee and donor-facing apps and enterprise integrations, using Spring Boot, REST APIs, HTMX and modern UI frameworks, with CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, CloudFormation) and observability.
• Lead re-architecture of legacy platforms into microservices and event-driven architectures, manage technical debt and apply migration patterns such as strangler fig, dual-write and shadow traffic.
• Lead integration strategies (API-led, event-driven with Kafka, SQS/SNS, ESB) and data pipelines and analytics platforms, and define data contracts for the shared data platform.
• Prototype and use AI-enabled workflows, and partner with the AI/ML Product Engineer to make AI features reliable in production.
• Work with quality, operations and regulatory teams to meet GxP and validation needs, write unit, integration and performance tests, mentor junior engineers, set service level objectives and take part in on-call and incident response.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering or a related field; equivalent experience considered.
• 5+ years of software engineering experience with a full-stack or platform focus, recent hands-on engineering within the last three years.
• Experience shipping software in a regulated or consumer-scale environment, and comfort with 21 CFR Part 11, HIPAA, GxP and EU Annex 11.
• Individual contributor role, not a path to people management.

Required skills

• Java (Spring Boot) or equivalent, with Oracle or similar RDBMS and familiarity with PostgreSQL, DynamoDB or similar.
• AWS or Azure, including compute, storage, messaging and managed databases.
• CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code and observability in production.
• Preferred: Power BI or JasperSoft, AWS SageMaker/Azure ML, AWS certifications.
