Senior Embedded Software Engineer

About the role

Avenga is looking for a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to join a team focused on the development, maintenance, security and long-term sustainment of mission-critical embedded platforms used in aerospace, telecommunications, industrial automation, healthcare and automotive systems. The role sits at the intersection of software and hardware, working with embedded, platform and system engineers in a hands-on environment with direct access to hardware labs and development platforms.

Key responsibilities

• Diagnose complex issues, develop enhancements and implement security updates to keep embedded platforms reliable throughout their lifecycle.
• Work across operating systems, BSPs, device drivers, middleware and applications.
• Maintain and secure embedded platforms deployed in critical infrastructure and mission-critical systems worldwide.
• Develop, improve and sustain software components that affect system reliability, stability and security.
• Investigate and resolve complex software and hardware issues affecting real-world products and customer environments.
• Contribute to the long-term evolution of embedded platforms running on Intel, ARM and RISC-V architectures.
• Partner with experienced engineers and drive technical excellence through code reviews, architectural discussions, defect analysis and continuous improvement.

Required profile

• 5+ years of experience developing embedded software products using C/C++.
• Hands-on experience with Intel, ARM or RISC-V architectures.
• Availability to work on-site in San José, Costa Rica, five days per week.
• Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Required skills

• RTOS, Embedded Linux and Yocto-based environments.
• Device drivers, BSPs, kernel components or low-level platform software.
• Troubleshooting and root-cause analysis across software and hardware; hardware debugging tools such as JTAG, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers and serial interfaces.
• Scripting with Python, Bash or Perl; Git and modern software development practices.
• Nice to have: wireless technologies (BLE, Wi-Fi, cellular), secure boot, code signing, SBOMs, CVE analysis, CI/CD pipelines, customer support in production, cybersecurity exposure, and experience in regulated or safety-critical industries.
