Principal Software Engineer (Remote)

About the role

Backcountry is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to act as the technical authority for its e‑commerce platform. You will set architectural direction, lead complex initiatives, and raise the bar for software delivery across its outdoor retail brands.

Key responsibilities

• Design and deliver scalable, high‑quality customer‑facing experiences across the e‑commerce platform.
• Drive front‑end architecture using modern web technologies with a focus on performance, usability, maintainability, and accessibility.
• Partner with product, design, and engineering leadership to create user‑focused features that drive business value.
• Own the full software delivery lifecycle: architecture, development, testing, deployment, documentation, and production support.
• Collaborate with backend and platform teams to design reliable APIs and services.
• Lead AI technical innovation, designing AI‑enabled workflows and leveraging AI toolsets to improve engineering throughput and quality.
• Mentor and coach engineers of all levels, supporting code reviews and technical decisions.

Required profile

• Senior technical leader with strong front‑end engineering depth and solid backend experience.
• Proven ability to lead complex engineering initiatives and own end‑to‑end delivery.
• Experience partnering closely with product, design, and engineering leadership.
• Demonstrated mentorship and coaching skills for engineers across levels.
