Director of Data Engineering

About the role

Walmart’s End-to-End Data & Analytics team in Costa Rica is seeking a Director of Data Engineering to shape and evolve the enterprise data platform. You will drive the architecture that powers AI agents, autonomous systems, and large‑scale analytics across the supply chain.

Key responsibilities

• Define and evolve enterprise data architecture for batch, streaming, and hybrid workloads.
• Establish standards for structured, semi‑structured, and unstructured data across domains.
• Design agent‑ready data patterns, including RAG, real‑time feature pipelines, vector indexing, and graph‑augmented reasoning.
• Partner with Engineering, AI/ML, Product, and Platform leaders to align roadmaps with autonomous decision‑making goals.
• Set observability, telemetry, lineage, governance, and AI auditability standards.
• Modernize legacy data lake systems into composable, event‑driven, agent‑aware platforms.
• Provide hands‑on technical guidance and mentorship to data engineers.

Required profile

• Proven enterprise‑scale technical authority in data engineering.
• Experience leading data engineering teams and defining platform strategy.
• Deep knowledge of scalable distributed systems, data processing, and generative AI.
• Ability to influence cross‑functional teams without direct authority.
