Business Unit Director – Rare Diseases

About the role

The Business Unit Director for Rare Diseases will lead AstraZeneca’s Rare Diseases portfolio in the region, shaping strategy, driving growth, and ensuring patient access. Based in San José, Costa Rica, the role sits on the Senior Management Team and is responsible for market preparation and successful product launches.

Key responsibilities

• Set and execute the strategic direction for the Rare Diseases business unit.
• Own the P&L, delivering sustainable growth and commercial performance.
• Lead cross‑functional and commercial teams across the region.
• Engage with government bodies, healthcare institutions, and patient communities to shape access pathways.
• Prepare the market for new product launches, including launch readiness and stakeholder education.
• Align regional activities with global strategies while adapting to local market realities.

Required profile

• Proven track record in sales and marketing leadership, especially in institutional markets and high‑cost therapies.
• Strong experience in strategic, business, and financial planning with consistent P&L results.
• Experience working in multi‑country or international environments.
• Successful history of launching products, preferably in rare or orphan diseases.
• Deep understanding of local policy, pricing, access, and reimbursement dynamics.
• Commitment to engaging external stakeholders, including patient groups.
