Substation Design Engineer - Renewables

About the role

Ulteig is seeking a Substation Design Engineer to support renewable energy, utility and power projects. The role focuses on creating and reviewing detailed substation drawings and ensuring designs meet engineering best practices and client standards.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and review design calculations, protective relay and automation equipment specifications.
• Resolve design challenges through field investigations and observations.
• Coordinate design aspects of projects, planning, scheduling and communicating with team members.
• Produce and review General Arrangements, Elevations, Cable & Conduit Plans, Grounding Plans, Physical Connection Details, AC/DC schematics and wiring diagrams.
• Perform AC and DC substation studies and support special projects or new initiatives as needed.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program or equivalent.
• Minimum 2 years of engineering experience, specifically in physical design or protection & control design of electrical power substations.
• Legal authorization to work in Costa Rica.

Required skills

• Proficiency in creating and reviewing substation design drawings (GA, elevations, grounding, cable plans, schematics).
• Experience with AC/DC substation studies and ground‑grid modeling software.
• Knowledge of substation protection and control schemes, basic relay settings, NEC, NESC, and RUS design guide.
• Strong command of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
