Senior Substation Electrical Engineer – Power Projects

About the role

Ulteig is looking for a Senior Substation Electrical Engineer to lead technical design and implementation for renewable energy and utility power projects. The role combines hands‑on engineering, detailed design work, and mentorship of junior engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Develop design recommendations, adaptations, and modifications for utility substations and relay automation equipment.
• Perform engineering calculations using standard formulas and industry guidelines.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to other engineers.
• Plan, schedule, and coordinate detailed phases of assigned project work.
• Support special projects, assist colleagues, and contribute to new initiatives as needed.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program (or equivalent).
• CFIA license (or comparable PE/P.Eng) with at least 12 years of electrical project design experience; 15+ years preferred in renewable energy or power systems.
• Ability to work in a hybrid schedule (3 days onsite, 2 days remote) and communicate effectively in English (CEFR B2‑C1).
• Legal authorization to work in Costa Rica.

Required skills

• Substation protection and control design following industry standards.
• Creation and review of design drawings: one‑line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, and control panel elevations.
• AC & DC substation studies.
• Substation SCADA, communications, and network engineering (plus).
• Knowledge of substation physical equipment, basic relay settings, and the National Electrical Code (NEC) (plus).
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
