Principal Software Engineer

About the role

Backcountry is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to act as the technical authority for its ecommerce platform. The role combines deep front‑end expertise with solid backend knowledge to shape high‑quality, customer‑facing experiences for millions of outdoor enthusiasts.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design and delivery of scalable, high‑performance front‑end experiences using modern web technologies.
• Define front‑end architecture with a focus on performance, usability, maintainability, and accessibility.
• Partner with product, design, and engineering leadership to translate business goals into intuitive features.
• Own the full software delivery lifecycle: architecture, development, testing, deployment, documentation, and production support.
• Collaborate with backend and platform teams to design reliable APIs and integrations.
• Drive AI technical innovation by creating AI‑powered workflows and tooling to improve engineering throughput and quality.
• Mentor engineers across levels, conduct code reviews, and champion modern engineering practices.

Required profile

• Senior technical leader with extensive front‑end engineering experience and solid backend exposure.
• Proven ability to own large‑scale platform initiatives from concept through delivery.
• Strong collaboration skills with product, design, and cross‑functional engineering teams.
• Passion for building customer‑centric ecommerce solutions in a fast‑moving environment.
