Lead Accountant - Remote Costa Rica

About the role

MAVI places experienced finance and accounting professionals into senior, full-time, long-term roles at high-growth US companies. It is seeking a Lead Accountant to run the close and raise the quality of accounting work at a high-growth US company, working remotely from Costa Rica. The role reports progress, risks and conclusions directly to the Controller and US finance leadership.

Key responsibilities

• Lead month-end and year-end close, monitor progress, clear blockers and hold deadlines
• Own complex journal entries, reconciliations and non-routine transactions, documenting conclusions for Controller sign-off
• Review the work of staff and senior accountants and give clear feedback
• Maintain accurate financial statements under US GAAP and explain material variances
• Prepare PBC schedules, support auditor requests and fix control gaps in recurring workflows
• Improve SOPs, checklists and review processes, including where AI and automation can help

Required profile

• 6+ years of accounting experience, including hands-on ownership of the month-end close
• Experience reviewing or guiding other accountants' work, formally or informally
• US GAAP or IFRS experience with substantial exposure to US, UK, Canadian or Australian entities
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field, or an equivalent professional qualification
• Strong written and spoken English for daily work with US teams
• Preferred: CPA, Contador Público, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent; multi-entity or Big 4 experience; experience using AI tools in accounting

Required skills

• Complex reconciliations and non-routine accounting
• A major ERP or accounting system such as NetSuite, QuickBooks Online, Sage Intacct or Xero
