Principal AI Research Scientist – Multi-Scale Intelligence for Energy Transition

About the role

Join a leading non‑profit research organization to shape the next generation of AI systems that reason across nested scales—from individual buildings to entire nations—to accelerate the global energy transition.

Key responsibilities

• Define the AI research architecture for the NEST programme, a three‑year initiative on multi‑scale energy‑transition planning.
• Design nested‑agent and reasoning architectures that integrate existing energy models across spatial, temporal, and organizational scales.
• Set the research agenda, establish scientific vision, and collaborate with principal investigators, active‑inference scientists, and full‑stack AI engineers.
• Validate novel approaches through rigorous experimentation and model coupling.
• Publish findings and contribute to open‑source digital infrastructure for planetary stewardship.

Required profile

• PhD or equivalent experience in artificial intelligence, machine learning, or a closely related discipline.
• Proven track record of independent research at the senior or principal level.
• Experience working on complex, multi‑disciplinary projects involving large‑scale modeling.
• Ability to work remotely across time zones, with regular overlap with Central European and U.S. Pacific working hours.

Required skills

• Design of nested‑agent architectures.
• Active inference and probabilistic reasoning.
• AI research and development, including model integration and coupling.

What we offer

• Fully remote, international work environment.
• Three‑year grant‑funded term with possibility of renewal.
• Opportunities to influence high‑impact climate and energy research.
• Occasional in‑person team gatherings.
