System Protection Engineer

About the role

Ulteig is seeking a System Protection Engineer to lead the design, development, and implementation of protective relay settings and coordination studies across transmission, distribution, generation, and renewable assets. The role combines technical leadership with hands‑on engineering to ensure reliable and compliant power system protection.

Key responsibilities

• Perform short‑circuit, symmetrical component, time‑current, and step‑distance coordination analyses.
• Develop and coordinate protective relay settings for systems from 12.47 kV up to 345 kV (experience with 500 kV/765 kV a plus).
• Create test plans, assist with commissioning, and troubleshoot protection system events.
• Prepare NERC PRC compliance reports and support special projects.
• Provide technical guidance to engineering teams and review design drawings (one‑line, schematics, wiring diagrams, control panel elevations).

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program (master’s degree a plus).
• 4+ years of experience in system modeling, fault analysis, and relay coordination.
• Familiarity with NERC PRC standards and substation protection/control design.
• Strong written and verbal English communication (CEFR B2‑C1).
• Willingness to work a hybrid schedule (3 days onsite, 2 days remote).

Required skills

• System modeling and fault analysis software: ASPEN, CAPE, ETAP, EasyPower.
• Microsoft Office suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access.
• Mathcad (plus).
• Substation protection and control design, SCADA, communications, network engineering.
• Production of design drawings: one‑line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, control panel elevations.
• Knowledge of NERC PRC standards, NEC, and IEEE Power System Relaying and Control Committee (plus).
