Senior Software Engineer – Ecommerce Web Applications (Remote, Costa Rica)

About the role

Backcountry is seeking a senior software engineer to own the architecture, development, and reliability of its ecommerce web applications. You will work on the customer‑facing storefront built with Symfony, a Laravel back‑office platform, and the supporting services that connect them, while shaping the front‑end experience with JavaScript and CSS.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, deploy, and support PHP web applications (Symfony storefront and Laravel back‑office).
• Lead front‑end direction using JavaScript (including jQuery) and CSS to create responsive, accessible experiences.
• Champion AI‑assisted development workflows, share best practices, and define safe usage patterns.
• Own data‑layer design and optimization for SQL Server and PostgreSQL databases.
• Set engineering standards through code reviews, mentorship, testing, and documentation.
• Improve system reliability, observability, alerting, and incident response.
• Identify and reduce technical debt in legacy components.
• Break large initiatives into deliverable chunks and communicate status to leadership.

• Senior‑level software engineer with proven ownership of end‑to‑end product features.
• Strong leadership mindset; trusted technical advisor for the team.
• Experience working in fast‑moving, lean teams and delivering measurable reliability improvements.
• Comfortable using AI coding tools daily and guiding responsible usage.
