Principal Software Engineer (Remote)

About the role

Backcountry is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to act as the technical authority for its ecommerce platform. You will set architectural direction, lead complex initiatives, and raise the bar for software delivery across its outdoor retail brands. The role is fully remote, allowing you to work from anywhere in Costa Rica while collaborating with product, design, and engineering leaders.

Key responsibilities

• Design and deliver scalable, high‑quality customer‑facing experiences using modern web technologies.
• Drive front‑end architecture with a focus on performance, usability, maintainability, and accessibility.
• Partner with product, design, and engineering leadership to create user‑focused features that generate business value.
• Own the full software delivery lifecycle: architecture, development, testing, deployment, documentation, and production support.
• Collaborate with backend and platform teams to define reliable APIs and integrations.
• Lead AI technical innovation, creating workflows and tooling that improve engineering throughput and quality.
• Mentor and coach engineers across levels, guiding code reviews and technical decisions.

Required profile

• Senior technical leader with deep front‑end engineering expertise and solid backend experience.
• Proven ability to own end‑to‑end initiatives from architecture through delivery.
• Strong collaboration skills with product, design, and cross‑functional teams.
• Experience driving AI adoption or tooling within engineering teams is a plus.

Required skills

• Modern web technologies (e.g., JavaScript/TypeScript, component‑based frameworks).
• Front‑end performance optimization, accessibility, and maintainability practices.
• API design and integration experience.
• AI tooling and workflow automation concepts.
