Senior Controller – Real Estate & Development

About the role

Howard Financial is seeking a Senior Controller to own accounting and financial reporting for a portfolio of US‑based clients while leading the internal accounting team. The role combines technical expertise with client‑facing responsibilities in a fully remote, tech‑forward environment.

Key responsibilities

• Manage multiple client engagements simultaneously, overseeing month‑end close, financial statements and reporting to Howard’s standards.
• Serve as the senior point of contact for clients, leading meetings, explaining results and anticipating needs.
• Lead, coach and review accountants and senior accountants, assigning work, prioritising tasks and ensuring deadlines are met.
• Review reconciliations, journal entries, workpapers and financial statements for accuracy and defensibility.
• Apply US GAAP to complex transactions and determine appropriate accounting treatments.
• Identify process gaps, design and implement cleaner, faster, more consistent workflows across the portfolio.
• Handle escalations, make independent judgments and involve leadership when necessary.

Required profile

• 7+ years progressive accounting experience, including Controller or Senior Controller roles.
• Proven ability to manage multiple clients concurrently, preferably in public accounting or an outsourced firm.
• Experience leading and developing accounting teams, with a strong focus on quality and standards.
• Excellent written and spoken English, capable of leading client conversations confidently.
• Sharp ownership mindset, detail‑oriented and able to meet commitments without supervision.

Required skills

• Strong command of US GAAP and month‑end close processes.
• Advanced Excel proficiency.
• Experience with QuickBooks Online or similar cloud accounting platforms.
• Ability to quickly learn new accounting tools and platforms.
