Project HSSE Manager

About the role

Hanseatic Global Terminals (HGT), a subsidiary of Hapag-Lloyd, is part of the Sunset Consortium with APM Terminals, which has won the public tender to develop and modernize Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica's main Pacific port. The Project HSSE Manager develops, implements and oversees the Health, Safety, Security and Environmental (HSSE) strategy for this brownfield project, where construction takes place in or next to an active port. The role reports to the Project Director, with a functional line to the terminal HSSE Manager, and leads a team of HSSE specialists.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the project HSSE team (Environmental Manager, Safety and Security SMEs) and foster a proactive culture of continuous improvement
• Define the HSSE vision and strategy, draft the HSSE management plan and set goals and targets for the project lifecycle
• Manage HSSE risks, including SIMOPS between construction and live port operations, and build an assurance programme with audits, inspections and safety tours
• Drive environmental compliance with permits and commitments, and coordinate permits with the terminal
• Ensure port security and access control in line with the ISPS Code, and arrange access and visitor logistics for contractors and visitors
• Ensure transparent incident reporting, lead investigations of high-potential incidents and capture lessons learned
• Align emergency preparedness and crisis communication with the terminal and legal function
• Embed HSSE in the supply chain: assess supplier capabilities, embed HSSE requirements in contracts, review suppliers during procurement, inspect and audit contractors and track corrective actions
• Establish and report HSSE KPIs, prepare regular HSSE reports and support the Project Director with HSSE reporting and communication
• Coordinate interfaces and high-risk activities through planning and permit-to-work, train and coach contractor HSSE teams, and maintain a visible presence on site
