Design Engineer – Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

About the role

Ulteig is seeking a Renewable Electrical Design Engineer to support utility‑scale battery energy storage (BESS) and wind projects. You will work on multi‑disciplinary teams to create buildable, code‑compliant designs for 100‑500 MW renewable systems.

Key responsibilities

• Create and review one‑line diagrams, grounding, protection schemes, low‑voltage auxiliary systems, equipment elevations, bill of materials, panel board details, and cable installation drawings.
• Perform electrical studies such as cable ampacity, energy loss, short‑circuit, lightning risk, protection coordination, and grounding analysis.
• Select and specify key components including transformers, switchgear, inverters, relays, and batteries.
• Collaborate with internal teams, external contractors, and vendors to deliver complete designs and support utility interconnection applications.
• Provide technical guidance during construction, commissioning, and troubleshooting to ensure design intent is achieved.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
• Minimum 2 years of power‑systems experience, preferably with renewable BESS or wind projects.
• Strong written and verbal English communication (CEFR B2‑C1) and ability to present complex information.
• Self‑starter attitude with proven problem‑solving and improvement‑driven mindset.
• Legal authorization to work in Costa Rica.

Required skills

• ETAP, Easypower, CYME (or CYM CAD) software.
• AutoCAD, REVIT, CDEGS.
• Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
• Knowledge of NEC, NESC, IEEE standards and utility interconnection requirements.
