Deckhand

About the role

The Deckhand supports safe and efficient vessel operations under the direction of the Captain or senior shipboard manager. This role ensures the ship is ready for deployment while maintaining compliance with company policies and maritime regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Operate all deck and towing machinery safely and efficiently.
• Maintain and use safety equipment, including emergency procedures.
• Drive the vessel in emergency situations when required.
• Follow statutory and regulatory guidelines from IMO, classification societies, flag state and port authorities.
• Perform routine maintenance according to the Planned Maintenance System and carry out repairs as directed.
• Use VHF radio to communicate with customers, pilots and port authorities.
• Handle, store and manage supplies and stores.
• Build relationships with customers, pilots, port authorities and agents; attend operational meetings.
• Conduct housekeeping duties on deck, in the engine room and accommodation spaces.
• Report safety hazards, near‑misses and contribute to a strong safety culture.
• Participate in safety and simulation drills, stand watch, and perform any other duties assigned by the Captain or management.

Required profile

• Working knowledge of deck and towing machinery and safety equipment.
• Ability to operate VHF radio communications.
• Capability to drive the vessel in emergency situations.
• Understanding of maritime regulations and company procedures.
• Willingness to perform routine maintenance and housekeeping tasks.
• Flexibility to adapt to changing manning and operational requirements.
