Low-Level Embedded Software Engineer

About the role

Joby is seeking a low‑level embedded software engineer to support customers through the certification of airborne software under DO‑178C. The role is hands‑on, covering hardware bring‑up, BSP and driver development, RTOS and hypervisor integration, timing analysis, and the creation of certification‑grade verification artifacts.

Key responsibilities

• Board bring‑up on customer‑selected hardware, including bootloader configuration, BSP development or adaptation, device driver implementation, and peripheral validation.
• Integration and configuration of certifiable RTOS and hypervisor environments, covering partition setup, scheduling, inter‑partition communication, and interrupt routing.
• Timing and resource analysis such as worst‑case execution time (WCET) determination, stack and memory utilization, and shared‑resource contention on multicore platforms.
• Development of verification artifacts aligned to DO‑178C objectives, including requirements‑based test procedures, structural coverage analysis, and traceability matrices.
• Support for tool qualification activities under DO‑330 when customer toolchains require it.
• Investigation and documentation of deterministic device configurations (cache, memory controls, core affinity, hypervisor scheduling).
• Direct interaction with customer engineering teams, certification authorities, and Designated Engineering Representatives (DERs) to defend technical approaches.

Required profile

• Engineering degree in Electrical, Computer, Software, or a related field.
• Proficiency in C and C++ for embedded/bare‑metal development and ability to read ARM assembly.
• Strong knowledge of modern computer architecture, pipelines, cache hierarchies, memory subsystems, and multicore SoC timing variability.
• Comfort working from datasheets and reference manuals and using lab tools such as logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and JTAG/SWD debuggers.
