AI Engineer

About the role

Johnson Controls International is looking for an AI Engineer to join its Data Science and Analytics team in San Jose, Costa Rica. The role blends software, data, and machine‑learning engineering with hands‑on generative AI experience, delivering end‑to‑end AI solutions that create measurable business value.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and deploy generative AI systems and LLM‑powered applications such as enterprise search, document summarisation, and conversational agents.
• Build and maintain data pipelines (ingestion, transformation, ETL) and MLOps workflows using CI/CD, Docker, and model‑serving frameworks.
• Apply prompt engineering, fine‑tuning, and orchestration techniques (LangChain, Microsoft Agent Framework, Palantir AIP) to adapt foundation models for domain‑specific use cases.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional stakeholders, translate business challenges into AI solutions, and communicate technical trade‑offs to non‑technical audiences.
• Mentor junior engineers, contribute to design discussions, and promote best engineering and data‑science practices.

Required profile

• 2–5 years of experience in software, data, ML engineering or data science, with hands‑on work on LLMs or generative AI.
• Proven ability to deliver data or ML pipelines and AI/ML solutions to production.
• Strong problem‑solving skills, independent project ownership, and clear communication of progress, risks, and trade‑offs.

Required skills

• Python, SQL, and software‑engineering best practices (testing, version control, clean code).
• Docker, CI/CD, and MLOps pipelines.
• Generative AI stack: prompt engineering, fine‑tuning (LoRA), LLM orchestration, LangChain, Semantic Kernel, Microsoft Agent Framework.
• Cloud AI platforms: Azure OpenAI/Azure ML, AWS SageMaker/Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI.
• Data tools: Snowflake, Palantir AIP, vector databases, embeddings, retrieval‑augmented generation.
• Data‑science libraries: pandas, scikit‑learn, statistical modelling, classic ML techniques.
